The Illuminated Tarot, Clarkson Potter Publishers, 2017

Bold, Intense Aries,

The solar eclipse may not have affected you as greatly as the fixed and mutable signs, but it did make you consider the gravitational pull between light and dark. You’re incredibly caring, yet focused on your agenda. You have boundless energy like the Sun, but you brood away in dark corners like the Moon. Sometimes you feel split, pulled in opposite directions by opposite drives. Yet, rather than contemplating which to follow, you often choose both—sometimes to your benefit and others to your detriment. As you begin this moon cycle, your goal will be to channel Virgo’s best qualities in order to narrow your scope and sharpen your focus.

Your next leap forward relies on honest, open communication and the compromise that results from holding space for another’s thoughts, feelings, and opinions. This isn’t necessarily your favorite dynamic to take part in; after all, you know what’s best for you, and you certainly know how to make things more interesting and exciting. The opportunity here lies in finding temperance, in inviting the influence of receptive, flexible energy to help you take a step back and consider what the best way forward might be. No matter what, you’re always able to take care of yourself, but with some planning, analysis, and foresight, you have the opportunity to craft a lifestyle you can thrive in.

As your edges soften with this new approach, you reconnect with your lunar aspect. You may actually begin to crave some time alone as recent events or developments cause your paradigm to shift. Things aren’t always what they seem; sometimes, you must plumb the depths to find the answers that your mind forgets but your soul needs. Amidst this period of inward-gazing, you’ll cultivate your compassion—this is one of those times when your ability to love and adore rushes forth and overtakes you. Embrace it—it’s an opportunity for you to learn, to grow, to evolve.

The Black Lilly Tarot by Aya Rosen (2008)

Knight of Cups · XVI The Tower

Love and chaos are your calling cards during Virgo season, Taurus! You might be the steady, grounded bull, but this month you’re called to court a little or a lot of loving disruption. The Knights of the tarot always challenge us to examine our motivations – what gets us moving? What excites our desires? What quests and causes lure us out our front doors and into the world?

This month, Taurus, the Knight of Cups says if you’re leaving your nest, let it be for love. Love of other humans, love of fresh air, love of the project you’re working on, love of the cause that’s got you marching in the streets. It’s time to make love the engine that drives you! Some of the obligations and humans and situations in our lives are hard to love, it’s true, and the time is coming for those things that you don’t love to be blessed and released.

The trick is, when we start to approach all things in a heart-centered way, we quickly learn that not everything resonates, not everything fills our hearts up.

The good news is, with The Tower in your corner, you have permission to banish and burn! In the name of love, Taurus, cleanse your space, your schedule, your news feeds, your life of anything that leaves your heart cold. Shake things up! By the end of the month, everything that remains should be a love letter to your glorious self and your magical life.

tarotscopes

Original Rider Waite Tarot, U.S. Game Systems, 2012.

This Virgo season is ushering in a big breeze of excitement into your life, dear Gemini. The Ace of Wands is holding aloft a new opportunity just for you. It’s time! You’re feeling inspired, enthused, and ready to go.

Ride this wave of enthusiasm like the gift it is. What we know: you’re tickled by the changes afoot in your life. It’s about time, and you’ve been looking forward to a new creative outlet, venture, or adventure for a while now. You have a lot to offer – innovation, ambition, and cunning.

Let’s focus on the cunning for a bit, shall we? The seven of swords indicates the potential for some tricky business. Perhaps the bounty being provided by the ace of wands is making you feel like the cat who ate the canary: satisfied and a little naughty.

This is all well and good, and can even add some fun zest to life. Be mindful, however, to avoid cutting corners or indulging in pettiness that could come back to bite you later down the line. It would be a shame to hinder the clear-cut growth of the ace of wands with too much mischief.

Instead, direct that joie de vivre towards your social life. The late days of summer will be giving you lots of joy and opportunities for travel and connection. Let loose there where your trickster spirit will be sure to amuse instead of distract.

And what’s that on the horizon? The solid, dependable knight of pentacles is riding into the picture, bringing his healthy and practical nature to the budding venture shown in the ace of wands. It’s the perfect balance between work and play, just in time to buckle down and make the beauty of the ace sustainable and long-lasting.

Dark Days Tarot by Wren McMurdo

“Bang Bang Bang
See Mama earth is in a crazy mess
It’s time for us to do our best
From deep sea straight up to Everest
She under crazy stress
unless you wanna be motherless
Clean heart, Green Heart
is the way…
This is a lovesong to the Earth
You’re no ordinary world
A diamond in the universe
Heaven’s poetry to us
Keep it safe, keep it safe, keep it safe”

– Lyrics from Love Song to the Earth” by a collaboration of artists

Cancer, your affirmation for this month is “I embrace my part in creating a more loving world.”

The state of the world has been on your mind. There’s the big World and the microcosm of the world comprised of everything you hold dear – your family, friends, work, and community.

Cancer, you feel things deeply. The pain you are witnessing weighs on you. And you want to play your part in wiping away tears, wrapping others in a loving embrace and raising the collective vibration from fear to love.

Sustainability is in your mind and heart. Maybe you’ve just recently begun working on a plan to make your little world and the big World a better place. After a time of asking yourself the question, “how can I serve?” something became clear. Perhaps you have or are on the brink of discovering how you want to use the precious resources of your time, energy, money and attention to be of service.

Your tarot allies during Virgo season are the Page of Pentacles, The World and the King of Cups.

The Page of Pentacles is a call to begin. Start gathering the resources you need to serve. Remember that you can be of service to self, partner, family, community or the world at large.

The World in the center shows the heart of the matter. As you lean your mermaid body into the ocean of life, you hold our powerful yet fragile Earth in your hands. You are looking at infinitely possibilities against the paradox of finite resources. You ask yourself, how can I be a good steward of my world?

The King of Cups reveals the depth of your feeling. With gentle hands, you are cupping the sorrow of others. As the Coldplay song goes, “every teardrop is a waterfall,” every expression of emotion initiates a healing process. Like the mermaid holding the World in her hands, we all want to be held with great care. How can you be a better caretaker of your emotions and that of those dear to you?

Cancer, you are the divine feminine leader the future needs. This Virgo season let your generous heart shine bright and big. Open your arms and embrace your part in creating a more loving world.

LEO
– Arwen –

Frank Fradella Adventure Tarot

Using the Frank Fradella Adventure Tarot, I asked, “What does Leo need to know most about this upcoming cycle?”

The first card up reminds me to tell you GET READY! Eight of Staves is a card of incoming action. This is you being given more than your fair share of work. Good news is you will also get a fair bit of recognition in this period as long as you are prepared to move. Nap when you can, my fierce Leo friends. The Universe has a backhoe with your plate as the dumping ground. I know you can do it. You know you can do it. So do it.

Next is the revealing Two of Masks. Two people finally show their real selves. It’s about intimacy that goes beyond that fear of being rejected. This step will be you opening up to someone that either takes you both deeper into the relationship or clears the way for someone better suited to your ways. Don’t drag your feet, darling. Get this part over so you know where you need to focus your energies.

Ouch on the last card! The Knight of Discs is a slap upside the head if you are taking on financial burdens that are not yours to carry. Too often you may want to be the strong one, the dependable one, the one who controls the resources. But that can wear your butt out! So please remember that if you are in a relationship, it’s okay to let your partner be a real partner. Don’t make money such an onerous task. You know you get a wee bit cranky when you think you are being taken advantage of, right? So if you never let them take on some of the finances, aren’t you taking advantage of yourself? Stop that.

tarotscopes

The Dreaming Way Tarot by Rome Choi and Kwon Shina, pub. 2012 US Games

Here’s an interesting situation. The Hermit, caught between the King and the Queen of Pentacles. The urge to retreat – particularly from social roles and expectations – is strong for you just now. The King and Queen of Pentacles are a power couple with influence, resources, and social standing. And here you are in the middle, wrapped in a cloak, sneaking off with just a lamp and a staff for company.

Maybe you’re just tired of ‘being there’ for everybody (or just one somebody). Perhaps you’re fed up with the rat-race or maintaining a certain ‘standard’. Maybe you don’t have it in you to share your resources just now, or to nurture, or care, or lead. That’s okay. The Hermit is an inward-focused card, reminding you that this is a good time to claim your own space and think about your own needs.

However dualities are showing up in your life, don’t rush to make choices. Give yourself time. It’s okay not to be super pro-active this month. It’s okay to spend some time being thoughtful, being alone, being quiet. See what comes up for you when you give yourself this space. What do you believe about the life you have built? How do you feel within this life? Don’t judge your responses to these questions, simply listen.

The Hermit is turned towards the Queen, shining a light over their shoulder. There is a leaning towards that softer, more internalised expression of pentacles’ energy. The Queen not only cares for others but is an expert in self-care, too. Dear Virgo, we all know what a perfectionist you can be, and this earthy King is you at your most organised, productive self. This month, allow yourself to step away from the need to be that. Allow yourself to go within a little, relax your control, just a little. Rather than worrying about things falling apart (they won’t) or you not being enough (you are enough, and more besides), focus on what nourishes you, what makes you feel comfortable. However perfectionism manifests for you, Virgo, remember that good food, a hug, or a hot bath are just as important for your health and happiness. Be easy with yourself this month.

LIBRA
– Asali –

Thea’s Tarot – ©1984 Ruth West

Libras, we are encouraged to use Virgo season’s energy to release ourselves of uncertainty and get into something real. The Ten of Pentacles is where we want to be, surrounded by the fruits of our labor, content in abundance, our resources in balance and under our good, if at times fanciful, management.

The Ten of Pentacles can be a difficult for space for us to get to, Libras. Virgo season asks us to mark our tendency towards indecision and procrastination when faced with the opportunity to fulfill a big goal. When the practical decisions need making, we want to run from them in the guise of taking our time to carefully weigh our options. All the while, the proprietor in the Six of Pentacles gazes at us wondering when we’ll stop “just browsing” and decide what we want.

Leading the Ten of Pentacles is the Wand Amazon. This Amazon is not necessarily sure of victory, but they know that they have to go for it anyway, reach for that wand and see what comes next. This is exactly the kind of impulse we need right now.

Whether it’s a selection of potential lovers or creative opportunities opening up, it’s time to make a move. It’s not that we’ll be making this decision without consideration- the pentacles rule the reading after all- it’s that we have to move beyond the pacing back and forth and finally move forward.

Quit browsing and pick something that moves you, whatever it is that calls you and says take me home with you.

SCORPIO
– HiC –

the Zodiac Tarot by Lee Bursten (art by Luca Raimondo).

CARDS FOR SCORPIO • 3 of CLOUDS (22 Aug ~ 5 Sept) • KING of TORCHES Reversed (6 Sept ~ 21 Aug)
HERBAL ALLY • PLEURISY ROOT • CINNAMON

« You may kill a fire. And everything you know falls to dust and ash. Yet the remarkable treasure in this seemingly hopeless pile, is hidden deep within. The burning embers incarnate the perpetual desire to go from spark to flame. » ~ Akilnathan Logeswaran

My dearest Scorpio, the Eclipse has happened and we move into a Virgo season that is more or less split in half by Mercury Retrograde (see below). So let’s take a look at how to best navigate each half in order to take full advantage of what each offers.

For the first half of the season (through 5 Sept), we have the 3 of CLOUDS. We can’t just keep trying to hold onto every last thread. At some point, we have to accept that what’s done is done. While Scorpios may be able to do that a bit more easily than other signs, this card reminds us to remain compassionate to the effect on everyone involved rather than just ourselves. Limits and boundaries may need to be reinforced or created, or perhaps a clean and clear break needs to occur, in order to keep the peace in relationships. But let’s do so with grace, tact, and a loving heart.

Let’s make things quick and clean and drama free in order to spare the already tender hearts and emotions on all sides. And whether relationships with other people or with a job or a house or anything else, the need to release and set free will be key to opening the space to move forward and for new things to be able to not only come into our lives but have the chance to grow and thrive.

For the second half of the season, as we move out of Mercury Retrograde and perhaps start to get a clearer sense of what the theme, meaning, the impact of the eclipse held for us, we have the KING of TORCHES Reversed. You know how when something appears fuzzy or your thinking is unclear and you shake your head to get your bearings? That’s what we’re asked to do as we shake off old visions that no longer represent us or no longer serve who we aspire to become. The old Self, a previous life, an old flame is extinguished in order for you to rise from the ashes as the Phoenix of Scorpio that you are.

We need to return to the spark of creation and the fire of transformation that lies at the very depth of our soul. But we reignite this not with a blow torch, but by gently blowing our breath (of life) on the spark and embers to let them begin to gently come back to life. Ease into things that had been delayed, gently take your time initiating new things. We can quickly and easily overdo, overreach and burnout. What is to come will take time (and will likely really start to come into being and speed up its manifestation after the first the year). Relax into, embrace and even enjoy the act, the process, the experience of transformation.

MERCURY RETROGRADE (12 Aug ~ 5 Sept)

Messenger Mercury is retrograde through 5 September. With Mercury mostly going Retrograde in Virgo, the majority of this cycle tells us to go back and make sure our details are correct. We may have to fix mistakes where details were wrong. Since Virgo is about our daily schedules, we need to go and re-evaluate our daily routines. Is it efficient? We may get new insight now that shows us how to get a better routine. Virgo also rules our health, so we may have to go back to the doctor to check something out again. If you know the House where Mercury is Transiting Retrograde you’ll see the area of life up for evaluation right now.

Mercury was moving backward at the time of the Solar Eclipse on 21 August, which means we might not fully comprehend the impact of the eclipse right away. But, what is most significant about this particular retrograde phase is that on 5 September, when Mercury comes to a standstill and then turns to go forward, the planet will be at the same degree as the August 21 eclipse (28+ degrees Leo). This suggests a need to run back to grab some bit of information that was forgotten or disregarded originally. Once in hand, hopefully, we can all start to make progress (finally, some of you might be saying ;).

the need to release and set free will be key to opening the space to move forward

 SAGITTARIUS
– Ariel –

Ostara Tarot (Schiffer, 2017)

7 of Swords | 2 of Swords | The High Priestess

Adventurous, Wandering, & Soulful Sagittarius,

This Virgo season will be full of challenges and tests in learning trust and communicating your truth. This will definitely prove to be interesting as Mercury will be retrograde in the sign of Virgo from August 12th to September 5th.

Where in your life are you not speaking your truth? Do you feel that others aren’t being honest? Integrity is everything this season Sagittarius! Is your mind or someone else playing tricks on you? Be discerning. Is what you’re seeing and hearing from both yourself and others really the whole truth and nothing but the truth? How important is this when it comes to your relationships?

With the August Eclipses, some harsh truths and realities may have been brought forth. The creatures of dishonor have come out of the darkness and into the light, in plain view for all to see. How do your monsters and fears look in the daylight? Are you more eager to confront them?

Remove your blindfold with the New Moon Solar Eclipse in Leo on the 21st of August – but only after careful consideration of what’s at stake. If you’ve been feeling like you’re at a stalemate, how can you find a happily peaceful middle ground or is the lack of trust so extreme that this isn’t a possibility? What expression of joyful song is caught in your throat? This Virgo season focus on your Throat Chakra, your energy center for self-expression, truth, and honesty.

When you feel that you’re seeing the truth from all sides and it’s hard for you to decipher which way is up or down, tune in. What truth does your intuition have for you? Are you holding yourself back by refusing to see the truth for what it really is? How well do you trust your own thoughts? Do you know the difference between your mental mind or paranoia and the integrity of your intuition? The High Priestess is revealing secrets to you, but to find the truth you have to be open to hearing her call.

From my soul to yours,

xo Ariel

The CBD Tarot de Marseille 2010

Goals transform a random walk into a chase.
― Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

For your tarotscope, I deviated from the normal format to address three questions about the recent eclipses and Virgo zodiacal season, respectively.

The sun has signed its name on your life bringing an unrivaled emotional clarity to you. Look at all those “tens”! X marks the spot!  The Roman numeral ten makes several appearances in this reading, correlating in Chaldean numerology to the sun and the Leo season, reminding us of the recent solar eclipse and all things fiery. Expect a sun-kissed voyage through Virgo season.

What wisdom did the Lunar Eclipse bring?

Take a look at that Ten of Cups. Like a game of Tetris, the final piece has fallen into place. You are the last cup to fall in line. Perhaps in a situation where someone (or many someones) has been waiting on you, you’ve decided you’re willing/able to move. You are finally aligned. That alignment forms the pathway to the breakthrough heralded by the solar eclipse.

What wisdom did the Solar Eclipse bring?

Judgement is the depiction of the gate that connects what is possible, imagined, spiritual or otherwise noncorporeal, and what is coming into being. It has all the finality of a bell ringing in the ears, where the sound is of resolution. In two words – glorious resonance. What once chafed, is smooth. What once was a chore, is a mission.

How this glorious resonance manifested for each Capricorn will vary dependant on their individual circumstance. Ie:   a resolution of interpersonal or family issues or reconciliation with a community. One way or another you will have felt closure.

What wisdom will Virgo season bring?

One thing is clear for Capricorns this Virgo season, this reading does not describe a finish line, more like the finish line is in sight. A finish line with renewed purpose. Where Capricorns know what needs to be done and finally feel at home doing it.

Look at how the sun illuminates the knight in the image above. Lighting their path as they ride a blue steed, blue as in consciousness, toward a golden orb in the sky that floats in front of them like the sun. You know who you are. Buttressed by the building energy of the seasons and guided by your discipline, go forward.

Release: Ace of Stones | The Foundation of Life
Increase: 9 of Pentacles | Tradition
Advice: King of Pentacles | Wolf

Oh wow Aquarius, do you have something BIG in the works, or what?! You are creating something amazing out of the prolonged darkness you made your way through over the past year and beyond, such that you feel a newfound freedom to relax into the flow that things are taking. You know you’ve reached a “home base” point, where you can trust that your Seed has been securely planted, and now you can focus on simply allowing yourself to become comfortable in your new surroundings.

You have worked long and hard to create this for yourself, and you can finally start to relax, knowing your transformation is almost complete. The sun will soon rise to shine brightly on you, so for now, enjoy the last slivers of “You time” before you are called forward to Rule the sweet domain you have created.

Yes indeed, the seeds you have planted were plenty fertile – they are preparing to burst forth with great force, so take advantage of this lull-time and rest as much as possible. You are about to be surrounded with new responsibilities, poised to have many more decisions to make, so take care of your energy and rest assured knowing that abundance is flowing towards you like a cool, green stream, ready to wash over you and into your Dream, filling it up with magic and luck and giving the strength necessary to persevere and see this through to successful, loving completion!

Your dark night is over, and the light is peering back in through the gaps – you’ve made it, and you are nearly ready to spring forth with a fresh and bountiful idea, one that will come as a surprise innovation, which allows your voice to be heard in a new way. Rest, meditate, and prepare to howl your success once you’ve completed this last lap of the cycle.

 PISCES
– Phoebe –

Morgan-Greer Tarot. Published by Morgan Press, Inc., 1979.

Dear Pisces,

Have hidden feelings, motives and agendas been simmering for you lately? Do you feel as though you’ve been in preparation mode for longer than you planned, pushing toward some mysterious moment of reveal that you’re not even sure you care about anymore? Do the long, hot days of summer seem to lead you into desert territory, ever further from your native water element?

Don’t give up. Even if you feel like you’re running on empty, your goals are within reach. Maybe you think you don’t have the energy or confidence to carry you through. Maybe you’re tired of fighting the good fight because it feels like you’re the only one who cares. Or you’re second-guessing yourself, convinced that your mind’s playing tricks on you, and transformation is just another illusion.

Judgment advises you that self-empowerment is the vehicle through which you will empower others. It’s time to embrace the world, not forget it. Just when you think the going can’t get any tougher, it will – and that’s your golden opportunity. Your powerful imagination and gift of healing will turn desert to water, and herald new life. Have faith – it will carry you through, and everyone else along with you.

Normally, Pisces, I’d encourage you to take a break, zone out and recuperate, indulge your love of escapism. But this is not the month to hide your head in the sand. This time, the struggle is real, and so is the breakthrough. Resist and overcome. When you succeed, you’ll look back and realize how much of an impact and you have on those around you, and how much more powerful you are than you ever dreamed.
